A Philosopher King Was Insecure

Writer's picture: Sarah LeeSarah Lee

Marcus Aurelius is idolized as the king of Philosophy. In the Latin Historia Augusta biographies, he was briefly described to be spoiled in his youth but frugal as an adult. He had self-pity and poor health including chest/stomach pains. Does it skew your view knowing an idol was imperfect?

Naturally, people avoid being painted as weak-- especially a king or leader. Insecurity is a survival skill: a form of self-evaluation that fuels action.

Look past your weak traits. Anger, laziness, and fears are normal. Marcus Aurelius is idolized for his unwavering mindset that pulls yourself and an Empire together despite any internal conflict. In the same manner, capitalize on your strengths and give your weaknesses little importance. Let your strengths outshine what weaknesses you may have.

Think a good thought today, and smile your best smile :)
